How to Prevent Weeds Without Killing Your Grass
Weeds are like that one neighbor who never leaves — they show up uninvited, take over space, and make everything look worse. But if you're trying to keep your lawn healthy without wrecking it, spraying random chemicals isn't the answer.
At Mraz Property Solutions, we’ve helped a lot of local homeowners across Lackawanna County get their lawns under control — without burning the grass. Here's how to fight weeds the smart way.
1. Start With a Strong, Healthy Lawn
The best defense is a thick, well-fed lawn. Weeds love thin, patchy grass because there’s room to sneak in. You can cut them off early by:
-
Mowing high (3–4 inches) to shade weed seeds
-
Watering deeply, once or twice a week
-
Fertilizing with a balanced lawn food in spring and fall
The thicker your grass, the less room weeds have to grow.
2. Know What You're Fighting
Not all weeds are created equal. The three main types you'll see around here are:
-
Broadleaf weeds (dandelions, clover, chickweed)
-
Grassy weeds (crabgrass, foxtail)
-
Sedges (nutgrass)
Why does it matter? Because the wrong treatment can kill your lawn, especially if you use a broadleaf killer on grassy weeds.
➡️ If you're not sure what you're dealing with, snap a photo and send it to us—we'll help ID it.
3. Use Selective Weed Control (The Right Way)
You can use weed control safely, but it has to be selective. Look for:
-
“Weed and Feed” for spring use (make sure your lawn is established first)
-
Post-emergent herbicides that target specific weeds
-
Pre-emergents in early spring to stop weeds before they grow (great for crabgrass)
✅ Always follow the instructions, and don’t spray in the heat of the day — early morning or evening is safest.
4. Skip the Scorched Earth Approach
Don’t use total-kill sprays like Roundup on your lawn. They’ll wipe out weeds and grass, leaving bare spots. If you’re dealing with a small weed patch:
-
Pull them by hand or use a weeding tool
-
Spot-spray with a lawn-safe weed killer
We offer targeted weed control for tough patches, so you don’t have to guess.
5. Mulch the Trouble Spots
If you’ve got weeds popping up in garden beds, tree rings, or sidewalk cracks, mulch is your best friend. It blocks sunlight and chokes weeds out before they even start.
-
Use 2–3 inches of hardwood or dyed mulch
-
For extra protection, add a weed barrier fabric underneath
