How Often Should You Mow Your Lawn? (Based on PA Grass Types)
Most homeowners know they should mow regularly—but how often is right? Mow too much, and you stress out your lawn. Mow too little, and things get out of control fast.
At Mraz Property Solutions, we take care of lawns all over Lackawanna County, and we can tell you this: how often you should mow depends on your grass type, growth rate, and the time of year. Here’s a simple guide to help you keep your lawn healthy (without overdoing it).
1. First, What Kind of Grass Do You Have?
Most lawns in Pennsylvania use cool-season grasses like:
-
Kentucky Bluegrass
-
Perennial Ryegrass
-
Tall Fescue
-
Fine Fescue
These types grow fast in spring and early summer, slow down during extreme heat, then pick back up in fall. So, your mowing routine should change with the season.
2. General Rule of Thumb: Once a Week (Minimum)
For most PA lawns, mowing once a week during the growing season is ideal.
-
In spring (April–June), you might need to mow every 5–6 days.
-
In summer (July–August), once every 7–10 days is usually enough.
-
In fall (September–October), go back to every 7 days if growth picks up.
➡️ Tall fescue can handle going slightly longer between cuts, while bluegrass tends to need more frequent trimming.
3. Follow the ⅓ Rule (Every Time You Mow)
No matter what grass you have, never remove more than ⅓ of the grass blade in one mow. Cutting too short weakens the roots and opens your lawn up to weeds, disease, and heat stress.
So, if you like your lawn at 3 inches high:
-
Don’t let it grow past 4.5 inches before cutting.
-
Don’t cut it lower than 2 inches.
➡️ Want to keep it healthy and thick? Stick to a 3–4 inch mow height.
4. Don’t Forget to Sharpen Your Blades
Dull mower blades rip the grass instead of cutting it cleanly. That leads to frayed tips, brown spots, and a stressed-out lawn.
At the very least:
-
Sharpen your blades every season.
-
Or, if you're mowing weekly, every 20–25 hours of mowing.
➡️ Don’t want to deal with blade maintenance? That’s where we come in.
5. Mowing Too Short? You Could Be Inviting Trouble
We get it—some folks like a tight, golf-course-style lawn. But unless you’re maintaining that level of care (watering, fertilizing, aerating), it’s actually better to let your lawn grow a bit taller.
Too-short grass:
-
Dries out quicker in the heat
-
Lets more weeds sneak in
-
Weakens the root system
